I hate having to configure a machine from scratch and seldom make backups of my personal data, unless extremely necessary. So I was a late adopter of Apples Time Machine for Mac.
For those of you who aren’t aware of this, it basically stores an up to date copy of everything on your mac automatically for you. It also has a pretty funky Time capability (hence the name) to be able to travel back through time and check out previous revisions of your documents, as and when you saved them.
Unfortunately this isn’t available for Windows at the minute. I suggest puchasing a Mac!
Anyway, one of the super cool features of Time Machine is the ability to transfer your settings and documents from one machine to the next. Say for example your Laptop breaks, or as in my case, you buy a new one, all you have to do it plug it in to your next machine and import whatever you want straight across. The restore to my new machine took under 1 hour and everything is there, even my login for skype, all of my apps, my email, eveything it seems apart from XCode, which needs to be installed manually via the main install CD.
Bring on Time Machine! I have not lost any of my productivity as I can take off from where I stopped. I love it!
